One Man's Eyes

I'm an early 30's engineer with delusions of adequacy. From here, I'll share my perspective, usually through words, sometimes through pictures, of the view of the world from one man's eyes.

Yes, yes, I know I haven't posted in a long time. I keep meaning to write about how I've been a slacker this holiday season....but I've been too much of a slacker to write about it.

So, enjoy this for now...

It's International Talk Like a Pirate Day!

My pirate name is:

Bloody Morty Roberts

Every pirate lives for something different. For some, it's the open sea. For others (the masochists), it's the food. For you, it's definitely the fighting. Two things complete your pirate persona: style and swagger. Maybe a little too much swagger sometimes -- but who really cares? Arr!

I am the 80's

Alright, I didn't get as high a score as I should have due to rushing through, as well as a few spelling mistakes that the test creater dinged me for.

I fully expect Shell to get a perfect score.

A lifer

I'm a Lifer!

To you, a job is what pays the bills. You put in your hours, follow the rules, and then go home. Occasionally, you consider quitting, but then you think of how bad the job market is and you reconsider. Whatever happiness you get, you get from your life outside the workplace. Relationships, family, hobbies, and outside creative pursuits are what really matter to you. You're probably taking this test at work because you don't have anything better to do.

Talent: 33%
Lifer: 56%
Mandarin: 46%

Take the Talent, Lifer, or Mandarin quiz.

So, I took the quiz that Shell blogged about a few days ago. Looks like I'm a lifer and I can't strongly dispute the assessment. While I do enjoy my job and the people I work with, I can definitely agree that I work to provide me a means to do the other things I want in life. A friend at work and I were talking about changing careers to things that better matched our hobbies. We came to the realization that, if we did so, they would go from being hobbies that we enjoyed doing to be work that had to be done. I enjoy my (very) amateur photography as a hobby and I improve my skills as I can. I don't think I would enjoy it nearly as much if I was forced to meet deadlines for projects or try to self market for work. I'm sure it probably also has to do with my main job, while involving lots of creative thinking, is strongly technically focused and art. At the end of the day, I'm an engineer, not an artist. And I work as an engineer so that I can afford to go on trips with my family, take my kids to the pool, and soccer, and the park, and to insure that they will have a good education and the opportunities for a good life for themselves. Well, except for my son - with his arm, he's going to have to be a professional baseball pitcher so he can support Momma and Me in our golden days :-)

Technorati

I read somewhere recently that there are somthing like 60 million blogs currently out on the web. This site is essentially the main specialized search engine for the blogosphere. You want to read blog entries about some keywords that you're searching for? Technorati is the place to go.
No, Technorati claims to be tracking over 45 millions blogs itself and it ranks them according to how many other blogs link to it. While it is still meaningless, searching for my own blog there shows it to be ranked at a little worse that 1 million out of those 45 million. Statistically speaking, not too shabby. What's really scary is that it's ranked even that high.
Of course, my friend, Shell is doing much better. Currently carrying a rank of 846,809 out of those 45 million. Come to think of it, she'll probably rank even higher now that I've linked to her again. It's all a viscious cycle.
I suppose I could work harder to be as popular a blogger, but, alas, I don't seem to be able to find nearly the time she does. Oh, well.

Yes, I took the Food Quiz, Too

You Are Chinese Food

Exotic yet ordinary.
People think they've had enough of you, but they're back for more in an hour.

Did I mention I hate oriental food? People think they've had enough of me, but they come back for more? That doesn't sound particularly good, does it. Ah, well. I think I'll go have a steak - tomorrow.

Catching up with the World

Alright, I've finally gone and done it and gotten a blog. I'm unique and special, just like everyone else. I had to create and ID to post a comment elsewhere. So, since I had to create the ID anyway, I suppose I may as well use it.

Admittedly, I'm rather brain dead at this point trying to get the home and life back in order after fleeing from the storm that went elsewhere. I'm thankful that we didn't get hit here in Pearland, but it had been a pain getting all unpacked and de-stormifying the house. I can't really stay storm proofing since a serious hit probably would have taken the house down anyway.

Alright, I'm stopping now or I'll find myself still typing hours later and I'm not ready for that yet.
